Hello Big Brother Big Sister,
You can call me Trisha; I am in my S3, and it’s been two years since school abruptly halted due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown imposed by the government. Lately, I haven’t been feeling well, so I ran some tests only to discover that I am three months pregnant. My parents are completely unaware of this because I show no physical signs of pregnancy. I have a strong desire to continue my studies, but that would mean losing the baby. Personally, I would love to have the baby, but my boyfriend feels uncertain about starting a family. I feel hesitant about telling my parents because they have expressed bitterness before and made it clear that they would not tolerate the shame of losing any of us to issues like pregnancy or early marriage. I am contemplating abortion. What should I do?
Dear Trisha,
One word for the wise is always enough. At your age, you are likely aware of the dangers associated with abortion, and keeping a pregnancy a secret for long is not feasible. While your boyfriend may not be ready to commit, it doesn’t mean your parents are tired of having you around. The potential for them to be angrier lies in discovering the truth from someone else or witnessing it firsthand, as a pregnancy is not a private matter like a headache but rather a shared experience. Face your parents with the truth and spare yourself the drama ahead. You can give birth to your baby and still pursue your education. Your parents may have spoken sternly because they wanted you to wait for the right time. Despite your attempt, circumstances have led you here. Carry your cross and turn it into a blessing. Don’t draw conclusions; a parent is a parent.
