Hello Big Brother Big Sister,
It has recently dawned on me that I am not alone in the ever-changing landscape of my future aspirations. Since nursery, my response to questions about my goals has been tethered to factors like my UCE results, my A-level combination, or the desired course in campus. Many of us play the precarious game of gambling with our futures. It’s time to redirect our energy towards a more purposeful path.
Dear Anonymous,
It’s perfectly normal not to have a concrete plan for the future. Many of us have been in that same boat. Personally, I once aspired to become a surgeon, but by the time I reached S3, everything changed. The challenges of classwork and the overwhelming pressure to stay focused made me reassess my goals. Instead of getting overwhelmed, I decided to take each day as it came, identifying my strengths, acknowledging my weaknesses, and making a conscious effort to improve every day.
As time passed, I found my way, only to lose track again due to life’s twists. However, I didn’t give up. I prioritized my strengths, refused to let anyone bring me down, and confidently pursued what I excelled at. The moral of the story is this: You may not have everything figured out now, and that’s perfectly fine. Don’t let external pressures from school, teachers, or peers make you forget your strengths. Focus on what you do best, whether it’s Mathematics, English/Literature, Biology, or Chemistry. Acknowledge your weaknesses and work on them.
When you feel ready, seek guidance from your career counselor to explore A-level combinations or campus courses. Building self-confidence and maintaining focus and self-drive are key. Don’t give up—everything else will fall into place. Don’t worry; you’ve got this!
