Hello Big Brother Big Sister,
I entered the new school right in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. A quick bond formed, making us the best of friends, inseparable. To others, it seemed like we were intertwined; when they saw me, they saw her, and vice versa. We shared every emotion, meal, class, and even the mundane routines, creating a unique connection. But then, abruptly, everything halted. As one party drifted away, the other followed suit. Frustrated with previous experiences, I had trusted her not to be like the rest. Alas, it seems all sand crystals are made of dust, regardless of others’ shine. Now, the predicament that lingers is trust.
Dear Anonymous,
I’m genuinely sorry about the upheaval in your friendship. I can imagine how tough it must be to come to terms with the changes. Here’s a hard truth: “relationships are seasonal.” It might not be easy to accept, but it’s a fact we must acknowledge. No matter how much we love people, be it friends, family, or partners, when their season in our lives concludes, they might leave, or we might leave—it can happen either way. Love alone doesn’t keep people; it’s their willingness to stay, regardless of the situation, that does. Interestingly, we have no control over others’ willingness. So, regarding trust, don’t fret. You can’t promise yourself never to trust again because people come and go. You’re yet to meet others who will reciprocate the energy you give. Keep loving those around you, put in effort where needed, but don’t overplay your role. Be selective.
