The Stanbic National Schools Championship, dubbed the Battle of Champions, wrapped up with a bang, showcasing jaw-dropping innovations from Uganda’s brightest young minds. Here’s the lowdown on how the finalists lit up the competition with their game-changing projects.
Uro-Care UTI Detector Strip
Sumaya Girls’ High School Nsangi stole the crown with their Uro-Care UTI Detector Strip, a quick, affordable way to detect urinary tract infections. Dip the strip in a urine sample, wait 3-6 minutes, and boom—results! They bagged Shs 20 million in business capital, Shs 5 million for their school, two laptops, a Shs 2 million teacher award, and a fully paid Shs 50 million trip to South Africa, home of Stanbic’s parent company, Standard Bank Group. "I am inspired by the projects these young people have been involved in. I firmly believe the thinking behind these innovations is what Uganda needs to achieve Vision 2040 and to position our young generation as global competitors."
Mentor Secondary School took first runner-up with their Automatic Patient Monitoring Device. This slick gadget tracks breathing and heart rates, stops drips when meds run out, and alerts doctors during emergencies—easing the load on healthcare workers. Ibanda Secondary School secured second runner-up with Koffia Candles, organic insect-repellent candles made from coffee, cloves, and eucalyptus. It’s a eco-friendly jab at harmful insecticides, protecting vulnerable communities.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) competition also spotlighted the teams’ green efforts, teaching students how to innovate while protecting the ozone layer. Sumaya Girls clinched this too, proving their project’s not just smart but planet-friendly. These champs show what’s possible when creativity meets purpose. Got an idea? The next Battle of Champions could be your stage!
