As Kololo Ceremonial Grounds buzzed with excitement for Watoto Church’s 40th anniversary celebration themed “Awesome God,” the atmosphere was vibrant and filled with anticipation. From cheerful ushers guiding attendees through checkpoints to the colorful ‘Big40’ event setup, the day promised something special.
The venue, transformed into a hive of activities, welcomed early birds seated comfortably in anticipation of a day-long program. Despite the weather's unpredictability, attendees came prepared with umbrellas and comfy attire, ready to embrace every moment. Those arriving later found cozy spots under pavilions or on mats, especially the children.
Reflecting weeks of meticulous planning, the stage setup, seating arrangements, and engaging activities like photo booths and children’s play areas added to the festive spirit. The highlight was the lively praise rally featuring dynamic performances by Bethany Music, Brian Lubega, and the church’s talented dancers and choirs.
During the service, Ms. Janet Museveni, First Lady and Minister of Education, commended Watoto Church for its profound impact on Uganda since 1984. She praised the church for nurturing over 5,500 orphans across three Watoto villages, providing them with essential care, education, and Godly guidance. Ms. Museveni also acknowledged the church's role in empowering 6,500 vulnerable women through vocational training and entrepreneurial support.
Rt Rev Henry Luke Orombi, retired Church of Uganda Archbishop, lauded founders Gary and Marilyn Skinner for their exemplary leadership and integrity. He highlighted their influence as a beacon of hope amidst national challenges, urging Uganda to embrace peaceful leadership transitions, as seen in Watoto Church.
Former Senior Pastor Chris Komagum fondly recalled Gary Skinner's humble leadership, emphasizing servant-hood over status. Pastor Marilyn Skinner expressed her desire to leave a legacy of service and inspiration for future generations, echoing Gary's optimism for Watoto's future under new leadership.
As the celebration concluded, the message resonated clear: Watoto Church’s journey continues to inspire and uplift, paving the way for a brighter future fueled by faith, compassion, and unity.
